Jane Eyre Gevrey-Chambertin 2023
Jane Eyre is an Australian micro-négociant who has been living and working in Beaune for more than 20 years. She made a distinct mark in Burgundy in 2021 when she was awarded a coveted Négociant of the Year award for her label of distinguished wines with a focus on Pinot Noir. Jane also returns to Australia each year to make a line of terroir-driven Pinot Noir bottlings from exceptional sites in Victoria and Tasmania. There is a lightness of touch thread to her wines from both continents that attracts a strong following.
The fruit for this wine is sourced from 2 vineyards in Gevrey Chambertin, aged between 35-55 years old. Combe du Dessus which is just opposite the Chateau of Chambertin and En Champs, a little further along the slope opposite the 1er cru vineyard Champeaux.
The fruit was so consistent we hardly needed to do any sorting. Like many of my wines the percentage of whole clusters included is slowly creeping up. It is a great tool to add complexity to the wines and also lightness and elegance in hotter years.
Once fermentation started the wine was lightly pumped over, combined with gently punch downs which were done by getting into the tanks and using our body weight to turn the cap over.
When fermentation was finished the skins were pressed and the wine transferred to French oak barrels. The wine has been racked and reassembled into tank and bottled on 29th November 2024.
Always very seductive! Packed with sweet, generous notes of blackberries and cherries alongside a spicy edge.
The palate has typically Gevrey cherry flavours finishing with fine, silky tannins. This year, this wine will benefit from a few years in the cellar before drinking.
