The Rich History of Chiara Boschis Wines

Chiara Boschis wines, located in the Municipality of Barolo, holds a significant place in the world of winemaking. Nestled in the heart of the region, their cellar overlooks the lively square where via Monforte and via Vittorio Veneto intersect, also known as the Via Nuova. The breathtaking view of the surrounding hills serves as a reminder of the immense effort required to maintain the steep terrain, transforming it into meticulously kept gardens that yield grapes of unparalleled quality.

Commitment to Vineyards and Vinification

Chiara Boschis wines take great pride in their vineyards, which are cultivated and predominantly owned by the company itself. Covering approximately 11 hectares, these vineyards are strategically located in the finest Barolo wine production areas. Among these are 2 hectares in the municipality of Barolo, specifically in the renowned localities of Cannubi, Liste, and Terlo. An additional 8 hectares can be found in the municipality of Monforte d'Alba, spanning the prestigious sites of Conterni, Mosconi, Ravera, and Le Coste. Lastly, there is 1 hectare in the municipality of Serralunga d'Alba, featuring the remarkable locations of Gabutti and Baudana.

In terms of production, Chiara Boschis wines strike a balance between tradition and innovation, resulting in wines that embody elegance and harmony. This careful approach is particularly evident in the vinification process. Grapes from individual vineyards, such as Cannubi and Mosconi, are vinified separately to accentuate and highlight their distinctive organoleptic characteristics. At the same time, the winery pays homage to tradition by creating the Barolo "Via Nuova," a blend that harmonizes grapes from six vineyards. This blend encompasses 2 vineyards in the Municipality of Barolo, 2 in the Municipality of Monforte, and 2 in the Municipality of Serralunga, ensuring a wine that truly represents the essence of the region.

The Vinification Process

Chiara Boschis wines employ meticulous techniques in their vinification process, ensuring the utmost care and attention to detail. The process begins with crushing and destemming, followed by red vinification in automatic vinificators. A tumultuous "emerged cap" fermentation, accompanied by controlled temperatures of approximately 28° Celsius, takes place. Throughout the fermentation, daily pressing and pumping over are conducted to extract the desired flavours and aromas. The next steps involve racking, light pressing of the pomace, decantation of the lees, and subsequent racking to enhance the wine's clarity and purity. Finally, the wine undergoes "malo-lactic" fermentation.

Aging and Refinement

Chiara Boschis wines understand the importance of aging and refinement in creating exceptional wines. Barolo, the pinnacle of their offerings, undergoes aging for approximately 2 years. This aging process takes place in lightly toasted French oak barrels, with capacities of 225 litres (barriques), as well as in large oak barrels of 2000 and 2500 litres. This careful maturation allows the wine to develop its complex flavours and textures. Langhe Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto, other prominent wines in their portfolio, are aged in second passage barriques for approximately 12 months. Dolcetto, bottled at a younger stage, receives a light filtration to ensure clarity, as it does not have sufficient time to naturally clarify itself.

The Finishing Touch: Bottling and Marketing

Chiara Boschis wines approach bottling with the utmost respect for the wine's integrity. They refrain from filtration and clarification, except for a light filtration applied to the Dolcetto, ensuring its natural expression. Barolo, after the aging process, further undergoes an additional year of bottle aging before it is ready for the market. The Langhe Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto, on the other hand, benefit from a refinement period of approximately 2 to 3 months in the bottle, allowing the flavours to harmonize and develop.
