The History and Significance of Champagne Krug

The Reserve Cellar is proud to present Champagne Krug, a renowned brand with a rich history and profound significance in the world of sparkling wines. Established in Reims in 1843 by Joseph Krug, a visionary non-conformist with an uncompromising philosophy, the House of Krug has stood the test of time.

A Visionary Non-Conformist

Joseph Krug understood that the true essence of Champagne is pleasure itself. Driven by this understanding, he pursued his dream of crafting the very best Champagne year after year, irrespective of annual variations in climate. With an original approach to Champagne making, he transcended the notion of vintage, aiming to create the most generous expression of Champagne consistently.

Paying meticulous attention to the character of the vineyard and respecting the individuality of each plot and its wine, Joseph Krug built an extensive library of reserve wines from numerous different years. This dedication allowed him to fulfil his dream and establish a House where all Champagnes would be of the same level of distinction.

A Legacy Perpetuated

Through six generations, the Krug family has passionately perpetuated Joseph Krug's dream, enriching his visionary vision and savoir-faire. They have embraced his philosophy and continued to create exceptional Champagnes that embody the essence of pleasure.

An Unparalleled Creation

The House of Krug was officially founded in November 1843, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey. Joseph Krug's first creation, the Krug Grande Cuvée, was born from his relentless pursuit of perfection. This extraordinary Champagne went beyond all known boundaries, becoming a symbol of distinction and craftsmanship.

Since then, the Krug Grande Cuvée has been re-created annually, with each new creation known as an Édition. The Édition number represents the number of times this act of creation has occurred, aligning with the number of years the House of Krug has brought Joseph Krug's dream to life.

A Testament to Time

After its meticulous crafting, each bottle of Krug Champagne enters the cellars to rest for approximately seven years. This period allows the Champagne to develop its unique character and complexity, ensuring that when it reaches the hands of Krug enthusiasts, it delivers an unrivalled tasting experience.

A House of Equal Distinction

In line with Joseph Krug's belief in equality among his Champagnes, the House of Krug proudly offers seven Champagnes, each representing an undisputed quality and showcasing a distinct expression of nature. The pricing of these Champagnes is determined solely by their rarity, maintaining the integrity of Joseph Krug's original vision.
