Established in 1997 in the picturesque Yarra Valley, Giant Steps has emerged as a renowned winery, renowned for its expressive wines that embody purity and finesse. The essence of Giant Steps wines lies in their ability to truly reflect the unique characteristics of each individual vineyard site, spread across the expansive Yarra Valley region, spanning from Tarrawarra to Gladysdale.

A Pioneer's Journey

Giant Steps was founded by Phil Sexton, an esteemed figure in the wine industry, who embarked on a journey from Margaret River to the Yarra Valley in search of the perfect location to cultivate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines that epitomize purity and finesse. Phil's quest led him to discover his holy grail near Gruyere, where he established the Sexton vineyard in 1997, nestled on the steep slopes of the Warramate Ranges. Being an avid jazz enthusiast, Phil drew inspiration from John Coltrane's iconic album and apt metaphor, christening the winery "Giant Steps."

A Creative Collaboration

In 2003, Giant Steps welcomed Winemaker Steve Flamsteed, marking the beginning of a fruitful partnership. Together, Phil and Steve embarked on a mission to produce a collection of exceptional Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that authentically express the profound sense of place offered by the six meticulously chosen sites in the Yarra Valley.

A Commitment to Excellence

In 2021, Giant Steps welcomed Melanie Chester as the Head of Winemaking and Viticulture. Melanie brings with her a deep admiration for the winery, accompanied by an inherent responsibility to honour and celebrate the unique expressions and diversity of the individual vineyard sites. To achieve this, the winemaking process is closely monitored and transparent, ensuring that the distinctiveness of each site shines through in every sip. Melanie emphasizes, "The wines will never be identical as the vineyards continue to evolve, but our dedication to maintaining and surpassing the exceptional quality remains unwavering."
