Rebula
Rebula is a historic white wine grape variety from the Brda region of Slovenia, also widely grown across the border in Friuli-Venezia Giulia in north-east Italy, where it is known as Ribolla Gialla. The grape has been cultivated in this Alpine-Adriatic region for centuries and is celebrated for producing fresh, mineral-driven white wines with vibrant acidity.
Rebula wines typically show flavours of lemon, green apple, white peach and subtle almond, often supported by a distinctive mineral edge that reflects the limestone and marl soils of the region. These wines are naturally bright and structured, making them exceptionally food-friendly white wines, particularly alongside seafood, light pasta dishes and Mediterranean cuisine.
One of the reasons Rebula has gained international attention is its versatility in winemaking. While many producers craft crisp and refreshing styles, the grape is also well suited to skin-contact or orange wine production, where extended maceration adds texture, deeper golden colour and complex notes of dried fruit, herbs and spice.
For curious wine lovers exploring emerging European varieties, Rebula offers a unique expression of terroir and a fascinating introduction to one of Slovenia and Friuli’s most distinctive white grapes.
