The History of Charles Melton Wines

Charles Melton Wines, established in 1984, has become synonymous with premium Barossa red wines. Nestled on Krondorf Road, the winery has been the birthplace of exceptional wines that have captivated wine enthusiasts around the world.

The Pursuit of Unfashionable Varieties

During the mid-1980s, Charlie Melton, along with a dedicated group of Barossa winemakers, embarked on a remarkable journey. They defied convention and embraced what were then considered unfashionable grape varieties: Shiraz and Grenache. Charlie's audacious spirit and determination led him to create a range of classic dry reds, most notably the renowned Grenache/Shiraz/Mataro blend known as the Nine Popes. Inspired by the wines of the Rhone, these exquisite creations soon emerged as shining examples of their own varietals.

National and International Recognition

Since the inaugural vintage in 1984, Charles Melton Wines has earned widespread acclaim for its exceptional red table wines. From the delicate and vibrant 'The Rose of Virginia' to the flagship 'Nine Popes'—Australia's premier Rhone-style red—our diverse portfolio showcases the unparalleled craftsmanship and dedication to quality that defines their winery. Charlie Melton's limited productions of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sparkling Shiraz, and the exquisite Sotto di Ferro, a vin-santo-styled dessert wine, further demonstrate his unwavering commitment to excellence.

Preserving the Barossa's Viticultural Heritage

Charlie Melton was a visionary who recognized the immense value and rich tradition embodied by the Barossa's old vineyard Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro. At a time when others were making the regrettable decision to uproot Shiraz vineyards in favour of more fashionable varieties, Charlie championed the cause of preserving these historic vineyards. Through his advocacy, he successfully persuaded farmers to maintain their viticultural heritage, safeguarding the legacy of the Barossa's vineyards. Charlie Melton, along with a select group of winemakers, played a crucial role in preserving the cultural and viticultural fabric of this revered wine region.
