Description

Harvested from premium vineyards across the Clare Valley, bunches are handled to bring out the unique characters of each block. Kilikanoon vineyards span all three valleys that make up the distinctive environment of the Clare Valley region.

Like the story of the prodigal son who returned to his family, welcomed with opened arms, such is the return of Grenache to the consciousness and palates of wine lovers around the world. Grenache has long been a workhorse variety in Australian wine. Originally planted to produce fortified wine, Grenaches renaissance as a desired table wine continues. Prodigal Grenache was one of the first four wines made back in 1997 and sourced from a single vineyard in Leasingham.

Grenache from old, low-yielding, dry grown vineyards within the Watervale sub-region of the Clare Valley were vinified separately, and gently basket pressed. The parcels remained separate until the final wine was assembled. Maturation in a selection of seasoned French oak puncheons for nine months provides a softness and elegance to the plush velvety palate.

Review
Pours with a pretty, pale garnet colour. Attractive, lighter-weight red cherry characters amongst garam masala spice characters, a touch of sandalwood and turned earth, lifted, light minty notes – all up very attractive, pure feeling and fine boned. The palate feels fresh, tannins build gently with some flinty, mineral elements in the mix. Elegant and fine-boned grenache with plenty going on.

Review
This turned out to be a pretty good season in Clare, resulting in some first-rate red wines. The Grenache comes off a very old, low-yielding, dry-grown vineyard in the Watervale sub-region. After basket pressing, the wine was put into seasoned French oak puncheons for about nine months, contributing to its plush elegance and generous fruit characters. The colour is bright red and slightly translucent, and the aromas are fairly typical of the rose petals and strawberry notes that you get from this variety. There’s succulent, sweet fruit on the palate, with notes of Turkish Delight and spice, and a slightly dewy raspberry character adding mid-palate texture. Deliciously flavoursome, with a fine, lingering finish.

Tasting Profile
Nose

Fresh strawberry and raspberry notes are lifted by vibrant violet aromas.

Palate

Smooth and balanced, flavours of grenadine and blueberries evolve with notes of Turkish Delight and cinnamon. This medium bodied wine flows softly across the palate as the natural acidity lifts the wine. A raspberry compote flavour lingers, leaving a long and fresh finish.
