Description

Grenache has a wonderfully diverse flavour profile that changes from site to site and throughout its life in the bottle. This sensitivity to a site attracted owners David Gleave MW and John Ratcliffe to McLaren Vale when they first started Willunga 100 in 2004. At the time, few people took Grenache seriously, but they saw great potential in the old bush vines of McLaren Vale, particularly from the Blewitt Springs and Clarendon sub-regions. Today, David and John's vision is to make contemporary McLaren Vale wines with a strong focus on Grenache. With Renae Hirsch as Winemaker, our wines aim to be an authentic expression from each of our unique sites.

Grenache and Shiraz is sourced from our Willunga 100 Blindspot vineyard in Blewitt Springs on deep sandy soil. The Shiraz was planted in 1936 and is on a North facing aspect at 150m above sea level on a spur pruned trellis. The dry grown bush vine Grenache was planted in 1968, the altitude ranges between 150 and 170m on a South West Facing Slope. The Mataro was sourced from a nearby vineyard in Blewitt Springs, again on deep sandy soil, these dry grown bush vines were planted in 1940 at 200m altitude.

Review
Old estate vines for the grenache (1968) and shiraz (1934), with the mataro (1940) from a neighbouring site. The madness is both referential to the original vines being planted by Percy Moritz, or rather the perception by locals given the frugal sandy soils, and also to this modern incarnation that would only yield a mid-weight wine. I’m not sure the latter is much concern. Anyway, mid-weight, yes, but there’s some grunt here, the ironstone bedrock a promontory into the red and tart black berries and cherries, a rustle of woody herbs in the background. It’s a pretty savoury affair, some oak tannin giving it a linear drive, the finish sour-cherry-toned. This really needs air. Splash it in a decanter for best effect.
