Description

One of the oldest and most respected names in Chablis with superb vineyard holdings reflecting the families very long history in Chablis, this branch of the Moreau family is headed by Christian and now his son Fabien who is the winemaker and manager.

Possessing magnificent vineyard holdings built up in some of the very best vineyard areas of Chablis by the family over generations (including nearly 8 hectares out of Chablis’ total 92 hectares of Grand cru), this small but remarkable estate has in just a few years established itself as one of the leading producers of Chablis producing consistently outstanding wines.

Blanchot comes from the germanic blank clair. It is easy to believe that the name comes from the nature of the soil composed of very white limestone and its clay and limestone grounds.

This is the eastern part of the Grands Crus of Chablis. It has a south-east exposure and it is located on very steep slopes. Our parcel of Blanchot is of 10 ares.

Discreet but not imperceptible wood sets off ripe liqueur-like aromas of spiced pear, acacia blossom and moderate Chablis typicity. There is excellent richness and mid-palate density to the relatively powerful mineral-driven flavors that deliver fine length on the sappy bitter lemon-inflected finale. This delicious effort could use better depth so a few years of keeping should be beneficial. Drink through 2030+

One and a half barrels, in wood until now but will finish in wine globes. Fresh pale yellow, a light note from the oak, but well integrated, with perhaps a little warmth at the back. The white flowers are present but a bit subdued at the moment. This should all come together though. Acidity is fine. Drink from 2028-2038.

The 2022 Chablis Blanchot Grand Cru is definitely a step up from the Vaudésir: more mineralité and terroir expression, a greater sense of nascent energy. The palate is tensile with a leesy entry, white stone fruit, a little peachier on the finish than I recollect from barrel. Fine length. This is a Blanchot that should age with style. Drink 2025-2045.
