Description

Clos des Papes stands as a benchmark estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It was founded under its current name in 1896 by Paul Avril and is today directed by Paul-Vincent Avril. Rather than pursuing innovation for its own sake, the domaine has refined traditional practices with quiet rigor and unwavering fidelity to terroir.

Grenache forms the core of the blend, supported by Mourvèdre and Syrah, with smaller contributions from Counoise, Vaccarèse, Muscardin and Cinsault. Each variety plays a measured role: Grenache provides breadth and warmth, Mourvèdre brings structure and depth, and Syrah adds spice and definition. The diversity of the estate’s sites, from the galet covered plateau of La Crau to the finer sandy and limestone soils surrounding the village, builds a layered complexity into the final cuvée.

Exquisite… wafting from the glass with a captivating bouquet of sweet red berries, iris, dark cherries, menthol, blood orange and flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and textured, denser than usual, with a lovely, fleshy core of fruit… a strong candidate for wine of the vintage.

Deeply coloured and quite dark in character… generous, full-bodied, quite spicy and fairly potent, with lovely bright, sappy acidity and very fine, soft tannins.

Looking at 2023, this is another solid vintage for the Southern Rhône, producing a bevy of ripe yet not excessive, pure, charming wines with loads to love. Compared to the sunny, exuberant 2022s, the 2023s are less marked by the sun and have slightly darker aromatics, medium to full-bodied richness, a soft, plump, elegant style, and beautiful overall balance. As with the 2022s, concentration is good but not great, yet the wines shine for their balanced, layered, seductive style. Its medium ruby hue is followed by a gorgeously complex nose of red and black fruits, Provençal spices, and roasted meats. It's medium to full-bodied, with a seamless, layered, ultra-classy style that will drink beautifully for 20-25 years. Drink 2025-2048
