Description

Wendouree are wine-lovers wines. Their distinctive beauty confronts & challenges the drinker year on year, making them some of Australia's most recognised & sought-after wines. Tony & Lita Brady, custodians of Wendouree since 1974, have built the estate into the opposite of Australia’s modern, market-driven, high-tech industry, still only selling directly to their trusted mailing list year to year. Hidden in a clearing of red gums not far from the township of Clare, the old stone cellars, built-in 1914, are still in use and almost unaltered today. The wines made here are individual and age-worthy in the style of winemakers past.

Review
Deep and bright purple colour; blackberry, dark plum and smoky spicy savouriness on the nose. The palate is bold and bright with a sunburst of sweet ripe berry fruit; an utterly delicious wine with gorgeous flavour and fine, supple, filigree tannins in perfect harmony with the wine. A very elegant Clare shiraz.

Review
From the 1919-planted Eastern vineyard. A huge whiff of Australian bush to start, so too red cherry, raspberry, wet slate, figs and dates. The palate echoes the bouquet; it's saturating and deep in flavour while keeping a lithe frame. Terracotta tannins chime in, a little grumbly, but keep things in check. It feels like what you imagine fruit from a place surrounded by native trees, and produced from old, gnarled vines set in deep, rugged soils should taste like. Lighter on as the vintage seems to have dictated, but packed with character. For fancy glasses and dark cellars.
