Description

One of the oldest and most respected names in Chablis with superb vineyard holdings reflecting the families very long history in Chablis, this branch of the Moreau family is headed by Christian and now his son Fabien who is the winemaker and manager.

Possessing magnificent vineyard holdings built up in some of the very best vineyard areas of Chablis by the family over generations (including nearly 8 hectares out of Chablis’ total 92 hectares of Grand cru), this small but remarkable estate has in just a few years established itself as one of the leading producers of Chablis producing consistently outstanding wines.

The appellation of Vaillon is located on the left bank of Chablis. We have 6 parcels of a total area of 4,7 ha in the historical heart of the Vaillons, all exposed south/south-east.

The soil is also from the Kimmeridgien period with clay-limestone marls very rich of marine fossils, and most specifically small oyster fossils, called Exogyra Virgula.

Two wines are produced from those vines: our Premier Cru Vaillon, blending of five different parcels which average age is from 37 to 74 years old – and our Premier Cru Vaillon, Cuvée Guy Moreau issued from a parcel of 1 ha where the vines were planted in 1933 by Guy Moreau, Christian’s father. This is the oldest vine of the Domaine.

Review
Vinified half and half, stainless steel and wood, then all racked to tank in late May and will be bottled in January. Mid lemon yellow colour. A broader style of fruit though not yet very much detail. A certain bitter lemon note at the back. Currently awkward though obviously with longer term potential. Drink from 2027-2034

Review
The 2022 Chablis Vaillon 1er Cru Cuvée Guy Moreau has a stricter bouquet than the regular cuvée: petrichor and gunflint underlying the veneer of yellow plum and citrus lemon. The palate is very harmonious with a twist of sour lemon that imparts tension from start to finish. There's a patina of welcome fire on the aftertaste that keeps you coming back. Excellent. Drink 2026-2042.
