Description

Mount Ossa, rising from the pristine wilderness of Tasmania’s Central Highlands, is a dramatic landmark carved by ice and wind. Rugged and commanding, framed by twin dolerite peaks, it is Tasmania’s highest mountain and the inspiration behind the Ossa collection of distinguished wines.

The Ossa wines journey began in 2017 when Rod and Cecile Roberts purchased their 600-hectare farm on the East Coast of Tasmania. Parcels of land in this revered wine growing appellation are tightly held and rarely become available. Captivated by the wild, ancient landscape they knew instinctively that they had found their site. Rod’s background in horticulture and knowledge of the local soil and water dynamics made them confident grapes would flourish on the property.

Parcels of Pinot Noir clones 777, 114 and D5V12 were fermented separately with small inclusions of whole berry and whole cluster. Matured for 11 months in 500L French oak puncheons (15% new) with minimal intervention prior to bottling.

Review
Deep, bright red-purple colour, and a similarly bright, fresh and youthful aroma of dark cherry laced with spices and a fresh-herb note that could be from grape stems. The wine is brilliantly fresh and vital in the mouth, with intense black-cherry pinot fruit and a lacework of fine but persuasive tannins, then a long and harmonious carry. A smashing young pinot that drinks superbly now and should age extremely well too.

Review
Pinot noir clones 777, 114 and D5V12 from Ossa's East Coast estate, some whole berries and whole clusters, matured 11 months in larger French oak (15% new). Bright ruby with a magenta edge. Notes of red and dark cherries, wild strawberries and raspberry coulis cut with hints of undergrowth, fine spice, mountain herbs and wildflowers. A pure flow of plush fruit in the palate entry, plentiful in spice and light gamey notes with a tight, chalky tannin framework and pulsing mineral line. Finishes long, elegant and quite sweetly fruited.

palate

Boasting considerable depth and a generous, velvety richness, there is an abundance of ripe red berries, black cherry fruit, sweet spice, and hints of fragrant forest floor, all layered on top of smooth and silky tannins.
