Description

Domaine de la Côte has, in a very brief period, established itself as one of California’s top proponents of Pinot Noir. The estate comprises six vineyards on the western edge of the Santa Rita Hills, each with a unique geology, aspect, elevation, and microclimate. The ultimate exercise in terroir. The Domaine farms its vineyards organically and makes its wines with the philosophy of ‘add nothing; take nothing away.’ The wines, which really are quite special, embody the philosophy of owners Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr: freshness, vitality, and balance

The Domaine farms its vineyards organically and makes its wines with the philosophy of ‘add nothing; take nothing away.’ Fruit is picked early before any overtly ripe character can mask the personality of each vineyard, and the resulting wines naturally have a good level of acidity and a moderate level of alcohol - in most cases around 12.5%. The wines, which really are quite special, embody the philosophy of owners Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr, which centres around freshness, vitality, and balance. In Jancis Robinson MW’s words, “these are wines that eschew the heavy-handed, overripe approach of so many Californian producers. They are beautifully elegant, always refreshing, and effortlessly drinkable.”

Review

Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr make their Pinots taste effortlessly elegant, but it’s a fine-tuned approach in the cellar and ultra-attentive viticulture that achieve those mouthwatering results. Their estate bottling is like a juicy cross between Burgundy’s Volnay and Beaujolais’ Morgon.

One of the defining elements of the western edge of the Santa Rita Hills is the geology and topography of the land. In fact, this is exactly what drew us to this small corner of the appellation, where giant formations of ancient diatomaceous shale beds rise to a thousand
feet over the Santa Ynez River.

Here, we knew the vineyards would take years to become established, working relentlessly to drive their roots into the bedrock searching for small deposits of water and nutrients. These sedimentary soils, which over 20 million years have
slowly decomposed and fractured, today offer exceptional terroirs for the cultivation of Pinot Noir. This geological wonder, combined with the marine chilled climate, is what makes Domaine de la Côte so incredibly unique and special.

Tasting Profile

Nose
This estate cuvée exhibits an exhilarating aromatic complexity unusual for a wine so young. At the core, a bright array of summery red and black fruits finds itself adorned with a glowing perfume of mint, sassafras, baking spice, rock dust, and garden leaves.
Palate
Rich and viscously flowing in the mouth, the tannins here are incredibly fine and artfully integrated, making for a wine silky and lustrous. During its sleek passage through the mouth, the wine’s effortless concentration is notable—compactness of detail without overwhelming heaviness and density. It is a complex, artful wine that has no business being so irresistibly easy drinking.
