Description

The Mount Mary Vineyard estate wines are premium handcrafted wines produced in limited quantities. They are the result of the season and the vineyard in which they were grown. Each wine captures a sense of time and place. The four Mount Mary Vineyard estate wines are comprised of two blends traditionally grown and made in Bordeaux, France (Quintet and Triolet) and two varieties traditionally grown and made in Burgundy, France (Pinot noir and Chardonnay). These wines reflect our region, vineyard and the season in which they were grown. We believe that each of our estate wines have exceptional ageing and cellaring potential.

We aim to make a Chardonnay with great length, which reaches a balance between richness and elegance. While some techniques are borrowed from the Burgundians, there are some departures from traditional practice in response to local factors, which ensures a unique wine. The most notable of these is that our Chardonnay does not undergo malolactic fermentation, as our local climate leaves the fruit with ideal acidity when it is picked. Our Chardonnay is matured in 30% new French oak barriques with the remainder in older barrels and large casks (1500L). The entire production is barrel fermented. Relatively hard pressing is employed to give the wine texture and lees stirring is carried out to add complexity and body. The Chardonnay is matured in barrel for 11 months prior to bottling.

Review
A wonderful balance of power and restraint, with complex aromas sitting on the edge of reduction — preserved lemons, lanolin, honeysuckle, struck matches, crushed stones, citrus blossoms and white stone fruits. The palate has seamless texture and weight, in harmony with a core of fruit-supported, tightly wound acidity and a mineral drive. The concentration leaves you salivating for minutes. Great nerve and tension bring this wine together. Truly excellent.

Tasting Profile
nose

Aromatically, this wine opens with a vibrant lift of fresh lime, melon, and pear, supported by subtle oak-derived notes of brioche and toasted almond adding complexity.

palate

On the palate, a broad and expressive flavour spectrum unfolds. Lemon, lime, and grapefruit provide a bright and zesty core, transitioning seamlessly into riper tones of white peach, melon, and pear. Some well integrated, fine grained oak is present, contributing gentle layers of toasty, nutty complexity and crème brûlée richness without overwhelming the fruit. The wine finishes with length, intensity, and poise.
