Description

Hill of Roses is named as a tribute to Johann Gottlieb Rosenzweig (translating from German to ‘rose twig’), a member of the early Barossa Lutheran community who settled at Parrot Hill in the Eden Valley. Their toil, perseverance and conservatism in hardship has meant that the many generations that followed have rejoiced in the riches of those efforts. This wine is produced from a small selection of low-yielding shiraz vines from the Hill of Grace Vineyard, planted as a nursery block in 1989. The planting is known as the ‘Post Office Block’ after the historic Parrot Hill Post Office ruins overlooking the vineyard. These vines were a mere 12 years old when the wine was first produced in 2001 and at present are too young to be considered for inclusion in the Hill of Grace vintages. As per the Barossa Old Vine Charter, an ‘old vine’ is equal to or greater than 35 years of age. The quality of the grapes from this selection, however, has produced a wine that has warranted a separate bottling and limited release.

The 2022 vintage was late, with harvest dates one to two weeks later than the historical average. The resulting wines speak faithfully of their place, with elegance, distinction and enduring beauty. Reminiscent of the high-quality vintages of 1991, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2010 and 2015, the 2022 single-vineyard wines show wonderful ageing potential and will reward long-term cellaring under ideal conditions.

What a beautiful, super elegant expression of Australian shiraz. What once was a nursery block on the Hill of Grace vineyard is now very much a wine of its own individual style defined by the most attractive florals, red fruits, ease of style and an underlying, deceptive power.... forming the basis for not only a wine of beauty but also substance.

Deep red-purple colour. The nose is a touch closed, not especially loud-voiced, but there's spice, pepper and earth, a touch of walnut and some subtle oak influence. The wine is concentrated and punchy, with masses of tannins adding firmness, structure and length. Powerful and emphatic. Lovely wine (The vines are 33 years old this year). Drink 2027-2052.

Review
For many, this is seen as a baby Hill of Grace, as it comes from the young vines in that vineyard. Well, when we say young, 33 years young at the moment, which would be considered old by many wineries. The wine spends twenty months maturing in older French oak hogsheads. The team at Henschke won’t consider incorporating fruit from these vines in its famous older sibling until they are at least 35 years of age, but even that milestone will be no guarantee. The fruit will need to be of sufficient quality and to fit the style required. In the meantime, we have this wonderful Shiraz from the Eden Valley. A gleaming purple/magenta, it is immediately obvious that this wine is still very much its youthful phase. There is good integration throughout, and the nose does give notes of chocolate, mocha, coffee beans, blackberries and blueberries, aniseed, cloves, cassis and cocoa powder. This is a stunning Hill of Roses, with complexity already evident, great length and perfect balance through to silky, cashmere-like tannins. A seductive and alluring texture completes the picture. Pristine and taut, this will be a star over the next thirty years. Love it, and I expect the score to nudge up a touch further.

Review
Shiraz sourced from a single block of 33-year-old vines matured in seasoned French oak hogsheads for 20 months. Black cherry, blackberry and dark plum characters with a touch of blackcurrant pastille and hints of milk chocolate, crushed rocks, sage, bay leaf, dried meats, earth and a gentle violet note. Beautifully balanced and pure. Flavours stretch out luxuriously and confidently on the palate, with fine tannins emerging out of that fruit and a brightness borne of Eden Valley minerals and a very special site.
