Description

Harvested from premium vineyards across the Clare Valley, bunches are handled to bring out the unique characters of each block. Kilikanoon vineyards span all three valleys that make up the distinctive environment of the Clare Valley region.

Since the inaugural release in 1997, Kilikanoon’s first year of production, this wine has been one of our core wines. The Mort’s Block Vineyard was planted 50 years ago in 1973 by its namesake Mort Mitchell. This wine pays homage to Mort and is a celebration of his hard work, continued dedication to the land and the wines it produces.

The single parcels of Riesling fruit were picked over the course of a week at ideal stages and were loaded directly into the press. The iridescent free run juice was then allowed to drain and held separately, prior to the gentle pressing of the grapes. Settled naturally, the clarified juice was allowed to warm and commence fermentation. The fermentation continued at low temperatures to retain the fruit intensity, delicate aromas and fine acid line.

Review
Riesling comes in many different forms – skin contact, fermentation in oak, wild ferment, etc, – but there is a classic style of Riesling that never goes out of date. Mort's Block epitomises that classic approach in its concentration of fruit and singular purity of expression. Floral and spring-like in scent: citrus blossom, lime, spicy musk, orange peel. Youthful, taut in structure with emerging white peach, ginger spice and citrus flavours. Time is on its side. Mort's Block, which is the basis for this label, boasts old vines planted in 1970 and grown on red loamy soils over limestone. That limestone plays a role. There's an almost effortless balance here with mineral-laced fineness. Watervale Riesling in a great year deserves more time in the cellar, but few will be able to resist opening a bottle right now. Drink: 2022-2035.

Tasting Profile
Nose

Classic chalky aromas are lifted by rich aromas of ripe nectarine and mandarin pith.

Palate

The flavours that mimic the aromatics on the palate. A bright and natural lime like acidity drives the focused of the wine and persists well into the finish. The length of this wine is rich in flavours while leaving the palate clean and refreshed. A wine that can be enjoyed now and will also appreciate years in the cellar to slowly evolve.
