Description

Wow! Exceptional drinking. Beautifully weighted incredible mid-palate depth of flavour. Intensity and delicacy, now there’s a trick. So fine long. Beautifully developed. More layers than a Mille Feuille. Stunning translucent, complex & beguilling.

Owned by the Rosso family since 1946, it was replanted in three phases: 1984, 1996 and 2003. La Serra is located about 1km south of the village of Serralunga in the upper part of the Serralunga commune.

Giovanni Rosso is not just a Barolo producer, but a “Serralunga producer”. His Nebbiolo vineyards are located in the most historical areas of Serralunga, such as La Serra, Broglio, Damiano and Vigna Rionda (all mentioned in a document dated 30th May 1694), as well as Cerretta, Gianetto and Sorano. The type of soil, altitude, and exposure vary from one cru to another. Know-how learnt day after day over the past 100 years has enabled Giovanni Rosso to understand perfectly the subtleties of each plot.

Terroir and history in the vineyard are considered foundations for making great wine. The Rosso family possesses both: vineyards on great sites and vast experience in them. They have farmed vineyards in the famed Serralunga d’Alba region for over 100 years. In the early 1980s, Giovanni Rosso (second generation) restructured and replanted the vines in the notable Crus of Cerretta, La Serra, Broglio, Meriame, Sorano, Costa Bella, Lirano and Damiano with one aim in mind: produce the finest quality fruit he could. Thus, the vines are 25-30 years of age. Like his father before him, Giovanni very successfully sold all of his grapes to local producers. As is often the story, the following generation wanted to evolve from grower to producer and promote the family name. Returning from Burgundy in 2001, Giovanni’s son, Davide, took charge of the vinification and elevage of the wines. He was 27 years old at the time. Working closely with his father until his father’s death in 2009, Davide strives to make his wines “a perfect copy of their terroir”.

Review

Bright, illuminating garnet red. It presents itself with a very delicate nose, with hints of raspberry, fresh plum, underscored by notes of dried orange peel. On the palate, it features velvety, finely woven tannins, unfolding in a very balanced manner, with flavors of juicy plums, and a slightly sandy finish.
