Description

This wine carries the name of Stephen’s father, fourth-generation Henschke winemaker, Cyril Henschke (1924-1979); a tribute to one of Australia’s outstanding winemaking pioneers, who was renowned for old-vine, single-vineyard and quality varietal table wines. Cyril planted cabernet sauvignon at the Henschke Eden Valley property in the late 1960s. The cabernet sauvignon vines, along with cabernet franc and merlot, are planted on a north facing slope, and are managed with organic and biodynamic practices. First produced as a single-vineyard wine in 1978, Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon celebrates the incredible beauty that emerges from the vibrant rows of this Eden Valley vineyard, revered for its texture, depth, complexity and fine-grained tannins.

The 2022 vintage was late, with harvest dates one to two weeks later than the historical average. The resulting wines speak faithfully of their place, with elegance, distinction and enduring beauty. Reminiscent of the high-quality vintages of 1991, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2010 and 2015, the 2022 single-vineyard wines show wonderful ageing potential and will reward long-term cellaring under ideal conditions.

Review
This is a wine to make you fall in love with cabernet sauvignon and its secret weapon: tannin. The tannins are superlative, fine grained, agile, pliable, providing not only an important structural role in the 2022 cabernet but enhancing it. It’s a full-on charm offensive - words rarely written about tannin. They arrive in the wine with intent, a conduit for the delivery of intense, concentrated black fruits, dark plums with ripe dark roasting spices layered across earth, leaf, sage and undergrowth. Tannins run long and deep but, gracefully so, contributing elegance to the wine. Beautifully finished and crafted. Drink: 2026-2042.

Review
There is a very strong case that this might be the best Cyril yet released. It was first produced as a single vineyard wine back in 1978 from vines planted in 1969. From the 1990s, it’s been coming from Stephen and Prue’s vineyard planted in 1988. In many ways, this marks a slightly different direction for the Cyril, although the essential D stylistic varietal expression remains strong. It’s a firm and slightly tighter wine of terrific linear structure with a bright, lively acidity, which in this vintage is particularly evident. The thread of blackcurrant fruit merges with a slightly dried herb and sage-like character. It is probably the most precisely focused of any Cyril to date, leading to its poise and defined, detailed finish. Surprisingly, in some ways, it gets just a 5% smidgeon of new oak with the remainder seasoned. So you are getting a clear window into the vineyard and the vintage influence.

Review
100% cabernet sauvignon matured in French oak hogsheads (5% new) for 20 months. Lifted blackberry, black cherry and blackcurrant fruits with hints of olive tapenade, cedar, crushed herbs, bay leaf, violets and crushed rocks. Harmonious and silky in its travel with a core of ripe fruit layered with spice and herbs, fine, sandy tannins and a finish that draws out beautifully. No problem tucking this away in the cellar for an extended period.

Tasting Profile
Nose

Spicy, fragrant aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, tamarillo and violets are lifted by nuances of cassis, cocoa, black liquorice and crushed flowering herbs.

Palate

An alluring core of concentrated black fruits is framed by cedar, clove, star anise and black olive, with focused acidity and fine-grained tannins driving a long, powerful finish.
