Description

The Grounds Collection is inspired by a study conducted by Barossa Australia, bringing together winemakers, grape growers and climatic science experts, to evaluate and identify the variations of Barossa Shiraz across all four points of the compass. Further to this, our interpretation demonstrates unique terroir down to site, showcasing Single Vineyard expressions of Shiraz. Our terminology - ‘Northing’, ‘Easting’, ‘Southing’, ‘Westing’, is inspired by mapmaking, referring to the deviation or distance in the respective direction.

The 2021 ‘The Westing’ Single Vineyard Barossa Shiraz is grown on the western ridge of the Barossa. This single vineyard site, known as ‘V Block,’ undulates over 125m above sea level on red-brown earths over alkaline subsoils.

Very deep, saturated purple-red colour; reserved, brooding nose of dark fruits, earthy/terrestrial aromas, shale and broken rock, the palate full bodied and concentrated, dense and solid, with mouth-coating tannins and gravitas galore. A sleeping monster: it's very firm and deserves cellaring for several years.

Review
Another single-vineyard shiraz under the Seppeltsfield label, this time celebrating the fruit of the western grounds. Deep crimson to the rim of the glass and aromas of blackberry, black cherry and satsuma plum fruits. There is a slight ferrous edge here with hints of salted licorice, violets, olive tapenade, veal jus, dried citrus rind and roasting meats. Full bodied with compact, chocolatey tannins and a tide of black fruits and baking spices on the powerful finish.
