Description

The Proof is in the Glass, 2022 is a fabulous vintage for the domaine. Readers who have access to these wines will not want to miss them. With generous yields on the vine and benign weather, intense heat and drought proved to be quite manageable. In tasting, the 2022s are vivid and red in the glass, a stark contrast to the dark, imposing 2020s. Brisk acids and modest alcohol around 13% help exalt the personality of each site. Quite incredibly, the wines show no signs of a year that was the hottest on record. Once again, the Romanée St. Vivant is my personal favourite, as it encompasses all the qualities I seek in Burgundy, namely elegance, understatement and expression of place, but the reality is that all the wines are exceptional.

This wine really shows the potential for the Corton-Charlemagne appellation, with luxuriously ripe apple and quince aromas and an edge of acacia flowers and spice. The texture is dense but not heavy – my first impression was that this was a lush, hedonistic wine, yet it never loses sight of balance. The team picks the vineyard in two stages (on 8 and 13 September) to ensure thorough ripeness and the desired acid balance. The result is elegant and complete. It will be enjoyable before the Montrachet and should continue to improve for 20-30 years. 21,086 bottles were produced in 2022. Drink: 2028 – 2050

Aromas of sweet golden orchard fruit mingle with notions of clear honey, white flowers, toasted hazelnuts and petrol in arich and inviting bouquet, introducing the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru. Full-bodied, ample and layered, with a sweet and enveloping core of fruit, ripe acids and a chalky finish, it's built along lines similar to the demonstrative 2019. As readers may remember, it's produced from almost three hectares of vineyards, in the communes of Aloxe-Corton and Pernand-Vergelesses, that have been leased from Bonneau du Martray since November 2018. Once again, it reflects the domaine's vision for Chardonnay—picked at full maturity, in a powerful, gastronomic style. Drink: 2025 – 2042

Piercingly pure citrus, with a very fine flinty touch but no obvious reduction (ie no struck match). Suggestion of stone quarry and crushed white stones. At first a subtle note of lime yet dominated by grapefruit and a pithy quality that is part aroma and part taste. On the palate, great depth of fruit, a gentle grip and firmness of texture that slows the wine’s passage across your palate to a very, very long and mouth-watering finish. Although it is beautifully fresh, the acidity is an undercurrent only, not the lead player. Drink: 2027 – 2037
