Description

Domaine Armand Rousseau stands as a beacon among the revered names of Burgundy, its reputation gleaming alongside the likes of Romanée-Conti, Leflaive, and Jacques Prieur. With a steadfast commitment to excellence, these distinguished estates consistently yield wines of unparalleled quality, reinforcing Burgundy's exalted status in the realm of fine wines.

Nestled primarily in Gevrey-Chambertin, the domaine's vineyards encompass prestigious terroirs, with the exception of the Grand Cru Clos de la Roche in Morey-St. Denis. Impressively, Rousseau commands 8 hectares of Grand Crus, including 6.25 acres in Chambertin and 3.45 acres in Clos de Bèze. Moreover, it holds sway over 5.5 acres of the esteemed Premier Cru Clos St. Jacques, representing a substantial 40% of its total acreage, and reigns as the sole proprietor of the 2.5-acre Grand Cru Clos des Ruchottes monopole.

Review
The 2022 Chambertin is a monumental wine with supremely ripe black cherry, plum, and cassis fruit loaded with spice and floral notes. There is an immense depth of flavour and a superbly dense and compact texture. As the wine sits in the glass, it seems almost infinitely complex. This tightly wound wine is not as generous as the Clos de Bèze. The truth is that the Bèze is perhaps more immediately engaging, while the Chambertin has more substance and ultimate potential. However, both wines will probably outlive anyone tasting them today since they seem set to age for a century. 2035-2100.

A glowing crimson purple. The bouquet has all the civilised sensuality one could hope for. A glorious and classic Rousseau Chambertin nose. Here the very slight dryness will certainly be swallowed up. The weight of fruit on the palate will see to that. A surge of dense dark strawberry fruit completes the deal. (Nov 2023)

Toasted spices, new leather, ripe black fruits and crushed slate draw in the nose. The palate is gloriously dense, layered and suave. The tannins are thoroughly ripe and velvety, and the mouthwatering acidity spirals up the back palate. There are over 2.5 hectares of vines here from four different parcels making this an atypically representative Chambertin. Long, dry and minerally on the savory finish, this is one of the true marvels of the vintage. (2024)

The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru conveys a sense of grandeur on the nose, leaning slightly more towards red than black fruit, very harmonious and complex, with pressed flower scents filtering through with aeration. It is difficult to drag your nose away from the glass. The medium-bodied palate has very finely sculpted tannins and great depth with a smoothly textured, lightly spiced finish that lingers very long in the mouth. Superb. Drink: 2027-2065. (Jan 2024)

A more restrained, and less oak-inflected, nose somewhat grudgingly offers up its array of airy red cherry, dark currant, just turned earth, the sauvage and a dazzling array of spice elements. The mouthfeel of the equally tautly muscular broad-shouldered flavors is strikingly refined thanks to the dense but exceptionally fine-grained tannins shaping the superbly persistent finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. This is without question one of the stars of the 2022 vintage. Drink: 2037+. (Jan 2024)

Review
Aromas of sweet raspberries and cherries mingling with notions of orange zest, incense and spices in a complex bouquet introduce Rousseau's 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru, a full-bodied, deep and layered wine that's concentrated, precise and penetrating. It's one of the least evolved wines in the cellar, but it's very fine-boned for such a warm vintage. (1/18/24)
