Description

Bottled since 1991. The vineyard that surrounds the winery just north of the small town of Graton. Planted in a pure sand subset of the Gold Ridge soil series. A Chardonnay of delineated concentration, energy and verve with stone and orchard fruit toned aromas capped by a penetrating minerality. One of our best examples of the tension that can be created between density and lift.

Kistler is a proudly Californian effort. Our goal for nearly fifty years has been to lessen our imprint on every vineyard we work with and the wines that result.

Old world reverence applied to new world sites.

All of our Chardonnays are fermented in our subterranean barrel chais, where the native yeast and various biological patinas rule the ecology. Hand stacked french cooperage that we purchase as wood and have air dry aged in St. Romain where it is crafted into barrels three years later, houses all of the wines.

The 2022 Chardonnay Vine Hill Vineyard needs a lot of swirling and coaxing to unlock notes of green guava, crunchy apples, and beautifully ripe pears followed by nuances of allspice, acacia honey, and candied ginger with a waft of lime leaves. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers amazing tension and depth with layer upon layer of exotic fruits and spices, finishing with epic length and loads of mineral fireworks. This should age incredibly!

Review
Bright yellow/green-tinged hue and displays pure notes of tangerine, honeycomb, and caramel apple. It’s full-bodied but has a driving freshness of mouthwatering, salty acidity and a clean, toasty finish. It’s bright and needs time to show its best, but it’s going to be a worthy addition to cellars. Drink 2026-2037. I’d like to revisit this in 8-10 years.
