Description

Established in 1969, Yarra Yering is recognised as one of Australia’s most iconic vineyards. From 29 hectares of dry-grown vines in the Yarra Valley, we produce wines renowned for their signature structure, understated power, and enduring longevity.

1969 original vineyard establishment plantings of Shiraz and Marsanne, with additional Shiraz planted across the 1990’s. The Mataro & Viognier drawn from vines planted between 1984 to 1995.

Fruit was hand-picked, chilled overnight then transferred across a sorting table and destemmed directly to the Yarra Yering half-tonne open fermenters. As much whole berry as possible is retained to encourage perfume. A small portion of fermenters had frozen Viognier skins; tiny yields this year, added to the bottom. The wine was aged for 15 months in French oak barriques, 30% new before blending and bottling.

Approachable but softens and gains complexity with age. It has a proven track record and thus will evolve for 20+ years under suitable cellaring, though medium-term aging also offers rewards.

Deep ruby, bright in the glass with hints of purple at the edges. Raspberry, blueberry, cumin, rose petal and cinnamon aromas all sing out on the nose and palate. Every sip and sniff shines a light on a new corner of the spice rack that is on offer here. White pepper ebbs and flows, a hint of salumi lifts then fades all the while there’s power and density but it never sits heavily. Acidity brings life and fine boned tannins ensure structure and focus. The finish is eventually reached, demanding you return to the start again to discover something new. Drink 2025–2045.

A blend of 99.5/.05% shiraz/viognier. Fermented with whole berries and matured in barriques (30% new). The cool vintage shows through in what's a lovely and elegant rendition of this Yarra Valley classic. Aromas of red and black fruits, spices and ironstone together with a gentle meatiness. Medium bodied and supple. An approachable and quite delicious Dry Red No. 2 that will provide copious amounts of enjoyment now and over the next 10–15 years.

Tasting Profile
palate

Complex and layered; sweet and savoury all at once. The fragrance is a melting pot of violets, cranberry, plums, a whisker of bramble and fragrant five spice. Moderate in weight; the summer pudding fruits come in all colours, dialling up the flavour. There is cigar box and cardamom spice lending intrigue and a dry spice finish coupled by firm yet fine tannins that ably support the fruit.
