Description

Established in 1969 by Dr. Bailey Carrodus, on what is arguably the finest vineyard in the region, there’s not a cellar or wine-taster in Australia who hasn’t fallen under the spell of a Yarra Yering wine. From the Bordeaux-inspired Dry Red No. 1, mid-weighted, and a godsend in our land of the over-bearing and overwrought, through to the spine-tingling Rhone-like No. 2, the Yarra Yering wines have near-perfect precision, detailed fruit, tissue-thin tannins, and prodigious length. Carrodus was a genius, inspired by the great wines of Europe and beyond, his fastidious and knowledgeable ways set the path for many of our greatest young winemakers to come. Yarra Yering was always the next-tier; the wine that we all want to make, if we had the talent, but know, we can never achieve. Despite the sad passing of Bailey Carrodus in 2008, the legacy of Yarra Yering has rarely diminished.

Fruit sourced from the 1969 planted No.1 Cabernet Sauvignon, exclusively from the southwest corner following a gravel band through the block. Hand harvested, destemmed, and crushed into our Yarra Yering half-tonne open fermenters. Hand plunged twice daily until fermentation is complete, some extended time on skins until tannins soften before deciding to press based on taste. Gravity filled to 2 French oak Bordeaux-shaped barrels, one new and one two-year-old for 18 months completing malolactic fermentation in the cool underground cellars.

Review

“There is such clarity to this wine, from the exuberant colour to the masterful combination of flavours within, centred exclusively on this majestic variety. Blackberries and currants, bay leaves and lead pencil plus deep-etched cedary oak. It has a juiciness thanks to the acidity, and while it is fuller bodied, as with all YY reds, a defining feature is beautiful tannins: here they are, insistent yet super fine.”
