Description

Springflat Shiraz is their original flagship wine. It is a blend of 5 distinct estate grown vineyards in the Heathcote region. Parcels of fruit are made separately, utilising a small amount of whole bunches in the ferments for added texture, hand plunged, basket pressed and then matured in French and American oak hogsheads for up to 22 months, 40% of which are new.

The inaugural Springflat emerged from our winery block vineyard, a small 2.5-acre plot nestled on quartz buckshot clay soils. Its yields hover around 2 tons per acre, and it has been rooted there since 1988, maturing beautifully to deliver a profound depth of flavor. This vineyard's strategic location shields it from harsh winds but makes it susceptible to frost during colder years. Ironically, this frost challenge becomes a boon, significantly augmenting the leaf-to-fruit ratio, resulting in wines of extraordinary intensity. This twist of fate led to the serendipitous creation of the Duck Muck.

Over time, we've harnessed the distinctive qualities of multiple vineyards scattered across the Heathcote region to enrich our Springflat. These vineyards are over a decade old, benefiting from the arid conditions and the fertile Cambrian volcanic soils found in the southern reaches of the Mt Camel range. Our hands-on approach ensures they yield less than 2 tons per acre, unlocking complex, site-specific flavors that interlace seamlessly into the Springflat Shiraz, enriching its character and consistency.

The maturation process involves aging the wine in a blend of 45% new French and American hogsheads for a duration of 15 to 18 months, further enhancing its complexity. We recommend savoring this wine over the course of up to 12 years from its release. We proudly maintain a no-filtration approach, and you have the option to secure your bottle under a premium cork or screw cap, as per your preference, in our Standing Order Customer program. This limited production results in approximately 1800 cases of this remarkable wine.

Tasting Profile

Nose
Intense aromas of bright red fruits, chocolate and strawberry creams. It has it all.
Palate
The palate is dense and luxurious. Reminiscent of the smell fresh pastries wafting from a French patisserie, combining creaminess and silky yet dense red fruits. Complexity abounds here, with bright natural acids giving a lovely clean finish.
