MMAD Grenache 2023
Old-vine Blewitt Springs Grenache made with finesse and restraint by four of the sharpest minds in the game.
This is the third release from the MMAD crew - Martin Shaw, Michael Hill Smith MW, Adam Wadewitz and David LeMire MW - and it’s clear they’re now properly dialled in. The vineyard, planted in 1939, is the kind of site winemakers dream about: old vines on sandy soils with a layer of ironstone underneath, giving the wine both aromatic lift and a subtle grip through the finish.
The 2023 vintage was cool and late, which plays into the hands of Grenache here.
Grilled Meats, Pasta Dishes and Mature or Hard Cheeses
The 2023 vintage was cool and late, which plays into the hands of Grenache here. What you get is something with freshness, spice and plenty of detail, rather than overt power.
It’s mostly destemmed and fermented in a mix of concrete and large-format oak, which keeps things bright and textured rather than heavy or oaky. There's a little extra chew in the tannins this year, which adds some shape without getting in the way of all that red fruit and gentle earthiness. Still young, but already full of charm. If you’re into modern McLaren Vale Grenache, this one should be on your radar.
