In the domaine's second vintage of this wine, crafted from 7.2 acres (2.9ha) acquired from Domaine Bonneau du Martray in 2018, four distinct parcels are meticulously tended, with two nestled low on the Corton hillside, one in the middle, and one perched at a lofty elevation, exemplifying Aubert de Villaine's astute observation from the previous year, where the finished wine showcased an exceptional synergy born from the artful blending of these diverse terroirs; the 2019 vintage was a remarkable debut, and the 2020 iteration, perhaps even more exquisite, undoubtedly embodies the timeless essence of traditional Corton-Charlemagne.

World Of Fine Wine

Mid-gold; ripe, peachy, gently honeyed, lightly mineral, glass-filling, and persistent; an immediate sense of fullness on the palate, a generous concentration of dry-yet-sweetly-ripe fruit, all beautifully defined by its markedly tensing acidity; this is long and taut and subtly Corton sinewy, the hill’s minerality pervading the fruit on a striking length of aftertaste. At this stage, there is the characteristic tightness of youth, indeed were you to taste it blind, its great spine might put you in mind of a magnificent grand cru Chablis. Archetypal Corton-Charlemagne then, in its second rendition from the Domaine and in, perhaps, a more classical expression of the cru than the also-splendid, immediately gratifying 2019. Prodigious from the word go, but ideally leave eight years for magnified gratification. 2030–40+

Tasting Profile

The wine offers an enticing aromatic profile, with citrus zest, pear, and preserved peaches at the forefront. These fruit notes are elegantly mingled with hints of wheat toast, sesame oil, the alluring fragrance of vanilla pod, beeswax, and a delicate wisp of smoke. The wine's intense nose delights with scents of yellow raisin, Mirabelle, orange blossom, and the sweet allure of frangipane. The aromatics are remarkably well defined, creating a sensory journey that is designed to please the olfactory senses.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich, and textural, revealing a ripe and enveloping core of fruit. Lively acids and chalky structuring extract frame this fruit beautifully. The tasting experience concludes with a long and saline finish, leaving a lasting impression of complexity and finesse. The wine is medium-bodied and exhibits a slightly honeyed entry, complemented by fine acidity and a generous weight and texture. The tasting experience is further enriched by a fine grip on the finish, which allows the wine to linger wonderfully in the mouth, ensuring a memorable and satisfying conclusion.
