'Mitans' finds its origins in old French, signifying "center," which is apt as this vineyard lies at the heart of the appellation, nestled on the slopes beneath the village, encompassing a 0.65-hectare parcel that shares proximity with Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Barre and extends into the Mitans l'Ormeau lieu-dit, where the soil is characterized by the interplay of fine clay and limestone, and the vines, averaging 50 years in age, received just a subtle touch of whole bunch fermentation in the current vintage.
Renowned for its reputation as one of the most refined, gracefully structured, and thought-provoking expressions of Volnay, even as Leroux consistently produces wines of profound depth and intensity, the 2020 vintage stays true to this distinguished profile.
The 2020 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru has a generous bouquet with red cherries, blackcurrant and violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite spicy with white pepper and clove notes towards the finish. Very fine, but it needs time.
Half a crop, 6 barrels made. Once again this is paler in colour. A pretty elegant bouquet, à la Volnay. Not huge in volume, a bit of strawberry, just enough fruit to reach the back, but one of the more delicate wines of the vintage, albeit persistent.
