Description

Onannon embodies the collaborative effort of a trio of close friends: Sam Middleton and Kaspar Hermann, both hailing from Mount Mary, and Will Byron, proudly representing Stonier. Their craftsmanship is showcased through this exquisite 100% 95 clone Chardonnay, sourced meticulously from a singular Tuerong site. The journey begins with the delicate crushing of the fruit, followed by an overnight settling, and the subsequent transfer to oak barrels.

The Onannon team's expertise shines as they artfully experiment with varying levels of solids and a medley of yeasts, masterfully enhancing the wine's complexity. Notably, no malolactic fermentation is employed. Aged for 10 months in barrels, with 20% being new French oak, the result is a Chardonnay with an enticing nose reminiscent of smoky grilled hazelnuts, succulent nectarine, and a hint of ghee.

Upon tasting, it reveals a remarkably crisp and pure initial impression, akin to a refreshing soda, underscored by a subtle mineral undertone. This vintage showcases a heightened delicacy compared to its 2016 counterpart, expertly integrating the oak elements. The grand finale is marked by a pristine, chewy savouriness that lingers vivaciously, leaving a lasting and memorable impression.

Review

Invariably lovely wines from Onannon.

Nectarine, ripe grapefruit, vanilla wafer biscuit, a little spice and flint. Smooth and even delivery of ripe Chardonnay flavour, a creamy gloss with a ripe citrus tang, a little bit savoury, a little bit fruity, but finds ideal balance for pleasurable drinking. Finish offers watermelon rind and lime zest, and goes pretty long. Drink 2021-2024.

Tasting Profile

Palate
Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Expressive white peach and dried honey aromas emerge from the glass followed by biscuity oak, citrusy nougat and subtle gun flint notes. The mid weighted palate is both vibrant and gently rounded in its feel featuring white peach, nectarine and dried honey flavours over citrusy nougat and infusions of gun flint. Finishes dry and fresh with a long elegant and flavoursome aftertaste.
